Alexander’s intimate panels display the artist’s gestural style in full effect. The artist deftly moves paint around, employing many of the same techniques that he utilizes in his larger canvases. These works feature high-chroma values, and provide detailed snapshots of the landscape as the artist sees it. Works are presented with a seamless linen liner float, protected with UV70 anti-reflective glazing and finished by a satin white frame.
Canadian artist David T. Alexander is one of Canada’s most respected contemporary landscape painters, known for his expressive and colourful interpretations of the natural world. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1947, Alexander has built an international reputation for paintings that explore the relationship between land, water, light, and atmosphere. His work blends representation and abstraction, creating dynamic landscapes that capture both the physical presence and emotional experience of nature.
Alexander studied art at the Vancouver Art School and Langara College before earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Notre Dame University in Nelson, British Columbia, and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Saskatchewan. Over the course of his career, he has travelled extensively and participated in numerous artist residencies, experiences that have deeply influenced his evolving approach to contemporary landscape painting.
Working primarily in oil and acrylic, David T. Alexander is recognized for his bold colour palette, gestural brushwork, and layered surfaces. His paintings frequently explore the interaction of water and land, often focusing on reflections, shifting light, and atmospheric movement. These themes are central to his well-known “wet” and “dry” series, in which landscapes are transformed into vibrant abstract compositions rich with movement and energy.
David T. Alexander’s paintings have been exhibited widely across Canada and internationally, and his work is held in many major public and private collections. His paintings are included in the collections of institutions such as the Vancouver Art Gallery, Museum London, Concordia University, and the University of Toronto. In recognition of his contributions to Canadian art, Alexander was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
