Virginia Mak is a Toronto-based contemporary photographer renowned for her ethereal, painterly images that explore solitude, presence, and the nature of human experience. Mak brings a contemplative, intellectual depth to her practice, creating works that transcend the boundaries of traditional photography.
Mak’s signature style transforms traditional photography into a more abstract, painterly experience. Her images often depict lone figures in quiet, open spaces. Her luminous compositions often feature solitary figures suspended in ambiguous, dreamlike environments. Through the use of soft focus, diffused light, and reduced tonal contrast, she transforms photographic imagery into something almost immaterial.
Born in Hong Kong and based in Canada, Mak studied philosophy at the University of Calgary before pursuing photography at OCAD University. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is included in major collections such as the Canada Council Art Bank and the City of Toronto Archives.
The artist's chromogenic or inkjet prints have a UV laminate; they are mounted to an archival substrate and framed in white.
