CELEBRATION and NO SUGAR ADDED SERIES
2021-2024

Celebration, Bonifacho’s twenty-fifth series, is a continuation of the themes explored in the preceding series Habitat Pixel and Testament Papers. The connecting elements are evident through most of Bonifacho’s former series: abstract expressionist compositions making emphatic use of letters, words and phrases, reflecting Bonifacho’s fascination with languages; bright, bold colour; a push-and-pull between the order of lines and grids and the chaos of scattered fragments. The latter series see more and more breakdown of words and mutation of letters and symbols, as if viruses are infecting computer code. In Celebration, we see an ongoing exploration of the effects of viruses, broken code and disinformation: characters and symbols are set in neat, gridlike formations, yet fractured and scrambled beyond recognition.

The No Sugar Added series continues with these themes and also reflects a desire to pare back frills and unnecessary adornments, highlighting the power of simplicity by way of a rigorous form and bold, emotive colour. The devolution of communication continues to be symbolized with fragments of letters and symbols – complete or partial words are no longer present. – Alia Tracy

Artist Statement:

"I have a relationship with each painting which is driven primarily by emotion. This collection picks up from the previous 'Celebration' series, focusing on simplified grid structure and interrupted code-like symbology. However, while the 'Celebration' series focused on an overall presence of white with bright colour accents, this collection features rich, deep colours in combinations which reflect mood and intuitive impulse, emphasizing the all-encompassing importance of the present moment."  - Bratsa Bonifacho
