Bau-Xi Vancouver proudly presents Peace of Mind, the new solo exhibition by Toronto based artist Vicki Smith. Smith invites viewers into a contemplative world where stillness, presence, and self-awareness emerge through her luminous waterscapes and floating figures, which act as portals to personal memories and recollections. Rooted in the artist’s belief that painting is a form of meditation, these works offer a quiet refuge from the noise of everyday life, encouraging a deeper connection to the present moment and the possibility of inner calm.
Artist statement:
Can a painting bring us peace of mind?
By grounding us in the present moment art can change the way we experience a complex and noisy world. Both creating and looking at art will focus our attention and deepen our awareness allowing the mental chatter to fade and give way to an open and expansive mind.
‘Peace of mind’ is the most honest and accurate answer to why I paint. The sanctuary of quiet stillness that happens in a painting session is not intentional but it is the outcome. When it is just me and the paint trying to come to a silent agreement, time and my inner dialogue disappear. For me, painting is a working meditation that fosters peace of mind.
As always, peace is in the pause,
