New Artist Announcement: Laurent Chéhère
Bau-Xi Gallery is thrilled to announce the new representation of renowned French photographer Laurent Chéhère (b. Paris, 1972). Chéhère employs traditional photography and digital techniques to elevate architectural photography to a new level in his acclaimed Flying Houses series which will be exhibited at the gallery’s Toronto flagship location, 1384 Dufferin Street, from November 7 - 28.
Laurent Chéhère is represented Internationally and has shown at Photo Basel (Switzerland), Paris Photo (France), and Pingyao Photo Festival (China). His work is also in the collections of the Tokyo Institute of Photography (Japan) and the New York Hudson River Museum (US), among others. His practice has been featured in numerous publications such as Time, The Guardian, Vogue, and Vanity Fair. The artist lives and works in Menilmontant, a district in the French capital.
Using the cosmopolitan neighbourhoods of Paris as inspiration, Laurent isolates buildings of the urban context and releases them from the anonymity of the street. Assembled like puzzles, the artist allows the observer to discover hidden details amongst these imaginative narratives. He seeks to bring beauty to the mundane and reconnect with the fantastical notions of youth.
The Flying Houses photomontages of Laurent Chéhère invoke a sense of wonderment, nostalgia, and limitless imagination. Informed by creative luminaries such as Jules Verne, Hayao Miyazaki, Moebius and Robert Doisneau – among others – Laurent channels hundreds of photographic elements into fantastically creative scenes, transporting us into his dream-like world.
