We are excited to announce that Manitoba-born painter Kyle Scheurmann has joined Bau-Xi Gallery.

Through his quiet and contemplative paintings, Scheurmann speaks volumes, engaging in larger conversations surrounding land stewardship and ecological conservation. The artist participates in environmental activism not only as a painter, but more recently as a member of the press and as a Forest Protector. Scheurmann's work on canvas and jute contributes to and expands the longstanding tradition of Canadian landscape painting with intellect and contemporary social engagement.

Kyle Scheurmann joins Bau-Xi's esteemed stable that includes landscape artists such as Ted Godwin, Kenneth Lochhead, Alex Cameron, and David T. Alexander, who each champion the Canadian landscape in their own unique way.

Reflecting on this new partnership, Scheurmann states: "I am so grateful to be joining Bau-Xi Gallery at this crucial time in my practice. Painting has lead me to some of the most unique and threatened territories on earth. The responsibility to respectfully represent these narratives has become the crux my personal and professional life. With the willingness of Bau-Xi to amplify these messages in the spirit of advocacy, as well as the encouragement to continue pushing myself with meaningful frontline action, I believe quantifiable environmental change can be achieved."

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Kyle Scheurmann (b. 1988) centres his contemporary landscape paintings around the narratives of ecological crisis in some of the most unique and threatened areas in Canada.

Bearing witness to environmental change, Scheurmann’s works on jute act as documents of destruction that at first glance, present themselves as objects of beauty. Controlled brushwork and a nuanced colour palette give space for the artist to depict his lived experience as a ‘Forest Protector’.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1988, Kyle Scheurmann completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in at the Ontario College of Art and Design, Toronto, in 2013. In 2018, Scheurmann completed his Master of Fine Arts at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver, where he was given the honour of Valedictorian.

In 2021, the artist was invited to participate in Eden Grove AiR, a residency at the Fairy Creek Blockades on the Unceded Pacheedaht Territory—the frontline for climate change. For four months, Scheurmann lived 65 kilometres from cell service down a logging road, painting plein-air and immersing himself in camp life. During this period, Scheurmann experienced the injustices carried out by law enforcement, learning first-hand the legal frictions that have made national headlines. His time at Fairy Creek further galvanized his resolve to communicate these societal and cultural issues through his practice and tell a story: not his own, but one that affects us all. This time on the Unceded Pacheedaht Territory was greatly influential in Scheurmann’s work, seeing the subtle inclusion of these injustices enacted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Other residencies completed include Harvest Moon Society AiR, Clearwater MB (2021); Georgian Bay Land Trust, Georgian Bay ON (2020); Falcon Trails Artist in Residence, Falcon Lake MB (2018); and Kunstort ELEVEN Artspace, Starzach, Germany, (2018).

Kyle Scheurmann has been represented by Bau-Xi Gallery since 2021.
