Iris van Herpen Collaborates with David Leventi | Met Gala 2019
This time last year, Jordan Roth arrived at the Met Gala in Iris van Herpen couture. The neo-Baroque garment was imbued with illusion as photographs from David Leventi's OPERA series were revealed through every movement. Van Herpen calls this the 'glitch': "The line-design of the waves, when moving, creates a three-dimensional bubble effect and is designed to move faster than the eye can follow - therefore called a ‘glitch.'"
Two David Leventi photographs were selected to create the garment: Curtain, Royal Swedish Opera, Stockholm, Sweden; and Palais Garnier, Paris, France. By way of performance, when Roth spread his arms, he opened the curtains of the Royal Opera (Stockholm), revealing the expensive interiors of both the Palais Garnier (Paris) and the Metropolitan Opera (New York).
Not 24 hours after Roth's red carpet debut, Vogue's Nicole Phelps wrote a captivating article exploring the creation of Van Herpen's one-of-a-kind garment:
