Bau-Xi Vancouver proudly presents What Remains, the new solo exhibition by established Vancouver based artist, Jamie Evrard. This stunning exhibition reflects nearly fifty years of looking, painting, and returning again to the ever-changing beauty of the natural world. In these works, traces of earlier paintings - covered, reconsidered, and sometimes re-emerging - become a meditation on memory, experience, and the ways a lifetime of seeing remains present in what comes next.


Artist Statement:

For nearly fifty years, I have returned to flowers as a subject – they are ever-changing. Their briefness, fragility, abundance, and unruly beauty continue to give me reasons to look again. Each painting begins with something familiar and becomes an attempt to see it without relying too heavily on what I have already seen or painted before.

Yet, nothing begins entirely anew. Earlier paintings remain in my memory, in my hand, in habits of colour and gesture, and sometimes quite literally beneath the surface. Several works in this exhibition contain traces of previous paintings or changes in composition: fragments of decisions made, reconsidered, covered, and allowed to reappear.

What Remains refers to these visible traces, but also to something less tangible: the residual elements of a lifetime of looking and making. With time, experience becomes inseparable from the act of seeing. The past is neither erased nor simply repeated; it becomes part of the material from which I make the next painting. – Jamie Evrard, 2026
