Bau-Xi Vancouver proudly presents Chance at Bliss, a solo exhibition of works by award-winning Vancouver based photographic artist Anthony Redpath. Renowned for transforming ordinary, everyday scenes into the extraordinary, Anthony Redpath brings together a collection of new and earlier works, exhibited collectively for the first time. Through beach, park, and pool scenes that highlight Vancouver's inherent natural beauty, Chance at Bliss captures the light, colour, and social rhythms of a West Coast summer, while also indicating that simmering just below the surface is a sense of needed escape from the collective and individual burdens of contemporary life.
Artist statement:
This body of work is a study of the human spectacle in our epic surroundings of water and mountains.
The highly detailed photographs, meticulously constructed from 15 to 50+ images or more, consider the collective weight of politics, the environment, commercialism, idealism, and social issues, from which the people appear in a temporary state of whimsical detachment through various forms of leisure. Controlling the subject, mood and narrative with my considered selection and placement of individual beachgoers, I reveal aspects of the evolving human predicament. From a distance, the viewer experiences an overarching view of the human species and a striking statement of texture and colour over a majestic background; in moving in closer, the stories of the individuals come into focus.
There is a lot of noise in the media and in society that is healthy to shut off from time to time. I am advocating for a break or respite from the mental and emotional burden: in spite of all the chaos that is current daily life on a personal and global level, perhaps for a moment or two we can have a chance a bliss.
