Ian Stone's meticulously rendered still life and figurative paintings explore queer memory and camp through carefully arranged collections of ornamental and personal objects, with the body positioned as a site through which identity is formed, expressed, and remembered. Informed by traditions of 19th-century Realism and Western art history, his oil paintings and drawings are rich in detail and cultural awareness, reflecting how femininity, longing, and performance shape contemporary queer life. Paintings are unframed, while works on paper are framed under glass.

Artist's description:
In these paintings, the curtain still carries its associations with secrecy, performance, the closet, theatricality, femininity, and revelation. A curtain trains us to wonder what is behind it—to expect that something hidden will eventually be disclosed. But the butterflies refuse that choreography.

They have landed directly on the curtain's surface. They are completely visible and seem almost indifferent to whatever might be behind it. The curtain is no longer simply a barrier to be overcome. It remains as an architecture of concealment, but one that the butterflies no longer obey.

That distinction feels important to me. Coming out does not necessarily erase the habits created by the closet. We can remain conscious of how much of ourselves we reveal: how we move, how feminine we allow ourselves to be, what we wear, what we love, and what parts of ourselves we choose to make visible. The closet can survive as a behaviour rather than a location.

Here, however, visibility does not require disclosure. The butterflies do not emerge from behind the curtain or reveal some hidden interior in order to become authentic. They simply occupy its surface. And the surface itself—the folds, sheen, theatricality, ornament and femininity of the fabric—is no longer something to escape. It becomes the place where visibility occurs.

The curtain remains closed. The butterflies remain visible. What lies behind it may still exist, but it is no longer the condition through which they have to be understood.

Born in Montreal (1982), Stone studied printmaking at NSCAD University before completing an MFA in painting and drawing at Concordia University. His early training in printmaking continues to inform his approach to image construction, visible in the layered, deliberate process through which his compositions are staged, photographed, and translated into painting.

Stone has exhibited across Canada and internationally. His work is held in public and private collections, including the Florida State University Museum and the National Palace of Culture in Sofia, Bulgaria. Stone continues to develop a practice that bridges historical painting techniques with contemporary narratives.
