ABOUT JEFFREY MILSTEIN
Jeffrey Milstein’s (b. 1944) distinctive large-scale aerial photographs are the result of the artist’s fascination with the modern world and its emblematic man-made landscapes.
Since the early 2000s, Milstein has concentrated on high-density urban centres and the corresponding infrastructure and architecture. The artist’s critically acclaimed series AirCraft—comprised of perfectly framed portraits of the under-bellies of commercial, private, and military aircrafts as they descend for landing—progressed how we view mundane objects of transportation. Themes of social movement carry through in his series, LANY. Carefully positioned and using an ultra-high resolution digital camera, Milstein skillfully photographs neighbourhoods, airports, ports and watercrafts throughout New York and Los Angeles in a style that emulates the rich, graphic quality of architectural drawings.
In 2019, Jeffrey Milstein received exclusive access to the government-controlled Parisian airspace, releasing a suite of chromatically rich photographs of the iconic city’s historic core.
Born in the Bronx in 1944, Jeffrey Milstein completed his bachelor’s degree in architecture from UC Berkley in 1968, practicing as an architect until the year 2000.
Five monographs have been published, each exploring a significant series by the artist: Paris: From The Air (Rizzoli: New York, 2021); LANY (Thames & Hudson: New York, 2017); Small Dreams: 50 Palm Springs Trailer Homes (Schiffer Publishing: Atglen, 2016); and Air Craft: The Jet as Art (Abrams: New York, 2007).
In 2008, Milstein’s series, AirCraft, was exhibited in a year-long solo exhibition at the Smithsonian Museum of Air and Space in Washington DC.
