The Michael Wolf Estate is proud to release a limited edition Box Set for the artists' Paris Rooftops series.
Before his passing, Wolf had produced and circulated a limited set of twelve hand-selected viewing prints for this project. As part of the Estate's work to reorganize and catalogue his archive, they uncovered Michael Wolf's final specifications for the edition. In line with the Estate’s commitment to honouring Wolf's vision, as with the posthumous release of the Paris book, they are now making this work available for collectors in the form he originally intended.
About Paris Rooftops
After years of uncovering unexpected beauty in the chaos of Hong Kong’s vernacular culture, Michael Wolf relocated to Paris. Confronted with Haussmannian order, and the city’s heavy photographic history, he sought a new perspective. The result was Paris Rooftops: a pivotal body of work that revealed a hidden, geometric poetry above the boulevards.
Building on Aget’s example (whom Berenice Abbott as a weaving “tapestry of French civilization”), Wolf discovered an abstract language of zinc roofs, chimneys, and stone walls. Flattened into painterly layers, those compositions recall Fernand Léger’s Le Troit de Paris and Morandi’s Still Life's, transforming functional structures into lyrical forms.
About the Box Set
Michael Wolf always worked in terms of complete series, which become greater than the sum of their individual images. For the Paris Rooftops Box Set, he hand-selected what he considered the most representative twelve works . Together, they invite a viewer to enter his distinctive visual world, tracing the lines of rooftops and lingering on unexpected details.
Designed in collaboration with Jochen Wanderer (one of Wolf's partners on many of his most celebrated books), the Box follows Wolf's exact specifications.
