In a short time, Erin Armstrong (b. 1990) has become one of the most sought-after painters of contemporary portraiture, known for her abstracted and graphic approach.

The artist looks to the human imagination as her main source of inspiration. Particularly interested in the ways the mind can conjure and create worlds by piecing together memory and experience, and the ability of the mind’s eye to render a non-reality. The artist draws on the genre of portraiture, but chooses to depict not a person or sitter, but rather an atmosphere or sensation expressed inside the formal qualities of human shapes.  Armstrong’s paintings on canvas are populated by flat organic forms, sinuous lines, and repeating graphic patterns. The artist’s past as a graphic designer has informed her mark making and compositional tendencies.

Born in Toronto in 1990, Erin Armstrong has no formal art training.

In 2018, the artist completed an artist residency at ESXLA, East Side International, in Los Angeles, California. Armstrong’s time spent in California marked a shift in her practice, seeing the inclusion of various flora and fauna indigenous to the region along with leisure-based settings such the tennis court and swimming pool.

Other residencies completed include the ArtScape Gibralter Point Residency on Toronto Island in 2018, and the Meet Resident, Brooklyn, NYC, in 2019. In 2021, Armstrong is expected to complete her fourth residency, participating at the Vermont Studio Centre residency in Johnson, Vermont.

Work by the artist are held in corporate collections including Nike, Toronto; the Century Plaza Hotel, Los Angeles; the Broadview Hotel, Toronto; the Drake Hotel, Toronto and Prince Edward County; Hullmark, Toronto; The Langham Hotel, Boston; among others.

Erin Armstrong, has been represented by Bau-Xi Gallery since 2016, mounting her first solo exhibition with the gallery in 2019. The artist’s forthcoming October exhibition at Bau-Xi Gallery, Toronto, will mark the artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery.
