Double Entendre marks an important milestone in celebrating 40 years of Bau-Xi Gallery's representation of acclaimed West Coast Canadian painter Sylvia Tait.
Working in a variety of techniques, Tait’s non-objective paintings are illusive expressions of colour evocative of Synchromism, an early 20th century art movement that approached colour like sound to “compose” form in painting. A maestra of painting, Tait’s visual vocabulary is rich with sensuously applied layers of paint, disjointed strands of deep colour and free flowing soft-edged forms which converge, ascend, and transform with symphonic vigour.
In the artist's words: "Revisiting my old drawings and mixed media works this past year has brought me new energy and colour changes for today’s unsettled times. Broken and fragmented passages escaping from defined areas have been subject matter for me before, but the release of a new approach has allowed some chaos and freedom to play a more meaningful and darker role. Dualities and double meanings are always intriguing and keep alive connections to both surface, paint and ideas. The paint is the message and the massage."
Double Entendre accompanies Burnaby Art Gallery’s Journey- a public gallery survey of Sylvia Tait's works on paper spanning fifty plus years.
