Linearity (Yellow)
Pat O’Hara (1936-2025) was a celebrated Canadian abstract painter known for her dynamic, process-driven compositions that pulse with colour, movement, and emotion. Working primarily in acrylic, O’Hara developed a distinctive visual language rooted in lyrical abstraction, where spontaneous gesture meets meticulous layering to create richly textured, one-of-a-kind works.
Her paintings are instantly recognizable for their fluid lines, string-painted marks, and rhythmic repetition, achieved through an innovative technique of dragging paint-dipped strings across the surface. This method produces sweeping, organic forms that evoke both control and chance - capturing what the artist described as a “game of challenge, chance and obsession.”
Inspired by travel, environment, and lived experience, O’Hara’s compositions are infused with a sense of movement and emotional vitality, balancing bold colour with nuanced, layered textures.
O’Hara’s work is held in significant private, corporate, and hospitality collections across the country, including Air Canada, Pan Pacific Hotel Vancouver, Scotiabank, Citibank, and Polygon Homes.
