Hugh Mackenzie
Hugh Mackenzie (1929 - 2021) has been an important presence in the Canadian art scene for decades. He began his career as a technical artist (working on the Avro Arrow), and spent his professional career as an art educator (working at Ontario College of Art from 1968 until 1991). Mackenzie began as a high realist painter before turning more to abstraction. He switched easily between the figure and industrial landscape, from the representational to almost pure abstraction and from painting to his other great passion, etching.
The work of Hugh Mackenzie has been exhibited extensively across the country, is the subject of numerous catalogues and publications, and is represented in such major collections as the Art Gallery of Ontario, Carleton University Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Art. The artist's estate continues to have a large and avid following of private collectors.
