Six Mile Lake
Shi Le is a Toronto-based contemporary landscape artist whose luminous paintings capture the quiet power and emotional depth of the natural world. Educated in both China and Canada, he holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Waterloo. Over a distinguished career spanning more than two decades, Shi Le has also shared his expertise in painting through teaching roles at institutions including Lakehead University, the University of Waterloo, and the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute.
Renowned for his expressive and colour-rich landscapes, Shi Le creates works that sit between observation and emotion. His paintings are not literal depictions of place, but deeply felt interpretations of nature filtered through memory, sensation, and atmosphere. Rivers, forests, and natural terrains become immersive visual experiences, alive with shimmering light, layered colour, and a palpable sense of movement and stillness.
Shi Le’s artistic practice is rooted in a profound connection to the environment. He describes his process as a response to nature, where walking along rivers, resting on rocks, and observing the subtle rhythms of water inspire a meditative state of awareness. This experience is translated onto canvas through a distinctive layering and colouring process that transforms natural scenes into evocative, almost dreamlike landscapes.
With an exhibition history dating back to 1980, Shi Le continues to be recognised for his ability to merge Eastern and Western painting traditions into a unique visual language, one that celebrates the emotional resonance of nature and the enduring beauty of the landscape.
Shi Le’s canvases have clean, painted sides and are ready to hang unframed. Custom framing is available, contact a gallery associate to learn more.
