Robert Marchessault’s Mur Vivants (“Living Walls”) series marks a renewed direction in his studio practice, translating the vitality of botanical environments into immersive painted form. Inspired by a three-week stay in France, where he encountered the pioneering vertical gardens of botanist Patrick Blanc, Marchessault developed a response that is not imitative but interpretive-seeking to evoke the same emotional resonance through paint.

Marchessault invents intricate foliage patterns and textures that fill the canvas edge to edge. The compositions are dense and enveloping, drawing the viewer into a close, almost tactile encounter with layered greenery.

"Building on trial and error I began establishing a method that allowed me to compose my images, creating textures, movement and colours that reflected what I felt without being too photographic. The paintings needed to be about themselves not illustrations of Blanc's installations. I wanted them to have a burst of biological organic energy, with the kind of impact that the vertical gardens gave me." - Robert Marchessault, 2026

Robert Marchessault (b. 1952) is a Canadian contemporary painter celebrated for his atmospheric landscape works that explore the emotional and psychological dimensions of nature. Marchessault has built a distinguished career spanning over four decades, developing a refined visual language that bridges representation and abstraction through meditative depictions of trees and open landscapes.

His signature trees, at once solitary and communal, carry a quiet psychological depth, often described as reflections of the human condition. These forms bend, dissolve, and reassemble across the canvas, evoking both resilience and fragility while inviting a deeper awareness of our relationship to nature.

Marchessault’s surfaces achieve a luminous softness and spatial depth that rewards prolonged viewing. Each painting unfolds slowly, revealing a poetic balance between structure and atmosphere.

Widely exhibited and collected across North America, Robert Marchessault’s work represents a timeless and sophisticated acquisition for collectors seeking contemporary landscape painting with enduring emotional resonance.
