Imago Dei | Jes Bonnie | 60 X 36 X 12 in. - $2500 CAD
"My recent work explores the utilization of photographs as sculptural material. Using custom sublimation printed fleece blankets, I abstract and inflate my imagery while physically manipulating the textiles into bodily, dimensional forms.
Attempting to merge my sculptural practice with my incessant photo documentation, I play with a dramatically inflated scale alongside an iterative image creation process. Delving into themes involving intimacy and the distortion of memory, the photographs transform into restrained, contorted, and bulging vessels; pushing their visual textures into a realm of decadent surrealism.
The selected images include an internal surgical view of the artist's uterus, a crushed insect, and a concrete body cast of a lover's collarbone. A painterly moment of sapphic embrace collides with a raw, glistening cross-section of sliced fish at a local market. Each image echoes the same language of an aching and intimate aesthetic.
Memory digitally woven into a sculptural image, pixels crunching and warping at their exaggerated scale, feebly recalling their original forms. Existing at the intersection of aesthetic beauty and revulsion, the artworks present photographic realism as something plush, broken down, and reborn."
