American photographer Jeffrey Milstein (b. 1944) is renowned for his striking large‑format images that transform aircraft, aerial vistas, and urban landscapes into compositions of extraordinary clarity, design, and visual impact. Working with ultra‑high‑resolution digital capture and a keen architectural sensibility, Milstein’s photographs explore the geometry, symmetry, and graphic potential of man‑made environments, positioning his work at the intersection of fine art photography, design, and visual culture.
Born in the Bronx and educated in architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, Milstein practiced architecture before devoting himself to photography in the early 2000s - a shift inspired by his lifelong passion for flight, aerial perspective, and structural form.
Milstein first gained widespread attention for his series Aircraft: The Jet as Art, in which he captivates viewers with meticulously composed portraits of jet aircraft captured head‑on as they descend for landing. This body of work was the subject of a year‑long solo exhibition at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., from 2011 to 2012, placing his work in dialogue with the history of aviation and design.
Expanding his visual inquiry beyond aircraft, Milstein’s aerial series, including LANY and Paris From the Air, reframe cities like Los Angeles, New York, and Paris from above, revealing abstract patterns, architectural logic, and urban rhythms that transcend conventional landscape photography. His photographs have been published internationally in Men’s Vogue, TIME Magazine, Wired, PDN, European Photography, and Esquire, among others.
Milstein’s work has been exhibited globally in solo and group exhibitions at institutions including the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, the National Galleries of Scotland, the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in China, and the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia. His images are held in major public collections such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, the Portland Museum of Art, and the Musée de l’Elysée in Switzerland.
The artist's large-format photographs are printed and mounted in his New York studio with archival materials. The works are framed in white behind UltraVue70, protecting the artwork from 70% of UV rays; frames measure 0.75 inches wide and 2 inches deep.
