Tethered To This Ocean (Diptych)
ABOUT THE PAINTING:
This painting came about after one of my many morning stops to the ocean on my way to the studio.
It was early spring and the saltwater still had that crisp clear sparkle of winter to it. I was perched high on a rock, which gave me a perfect view into the thriving sea forms below. The circular patterns of the kelp interwinding in the current made me think how everything in the ocean gracefully coexists and it made me feel incredibly connected to this place I call home. I really wanted to create this feeling of a wrapping form which would hopefully express the feeling of comfort and the love that the ocean gives back. The palette and use of various levels of opacity of the oil paint was my way to create the playful shifting of water and hopefully has resulted in a fresh way of depicting the ocean.
I came to realize that growing up next to the ocean has made me reliant on it emotionally… and it is as if I am tethered to it forever. So, it is quite a literal title.

Anne Griffiths is a contemporary Canadian painter based in Victoria, British Columbia, known for her expressive abstract landscape paintings that translate memory, place, and emotion into dynamic visual form. Working with intuitive gesture, layered colour, and energetic line, Griffiths reimagines traditional landscape painting through a modern, abstract lens - capturing not just what a place looks like, but how it feels and lingers in memory.
Her practice is rooted in the idea that landscapes are internalised experiences as much as external environments. Through rhythmic mark-making and a vivid, often luminous colour palette, she constructs poetic spatial relationships that evoke movement, atmosphere, and emotional resonance. Each composition reflects an exploration of how memory distorts, softens, and transforms the natural world into something more fluid and subjective.
A graduate of painting studies at Emily Carr University and the IDEA Program at Capilano University, Griffiths has exhibited widely across Canada, the UK, and Europe, including solo and group exhibitions. Her paintings are held in numerous private and corporate collections internationally.
Anne Griffiths’ work appeals to collectors seeking contemporary abstract landscape art that is both visually striking and emotionally evocative, offering a sense of place that is felt as much as it is seen.
Paintings have a matte finish and are ready to hang framed or unframed.
