Out of Town presents the latest work of realist figurative painter Shaun Downey, whose captivating compositions have earned the artist international recognition. Downey’s latest paintings are documents of personal experience, but also scenes which pay homage to the collective memory of Canadian cottage country. Scenes are familiar and enigmatic—classic in their atmosphere, but with unique, contemporary cameos that inject the canvas with a characteristic intensity and magical minimalism. The loaded silence characteristic of Downey’s work continues into Out of Town: “At the cottage,” says Downey, “we allow ourselves the space and time to savour moments, to take our sweet time with every task, and give them the attention they deserve...We get to enjoy hours without speaking, letting the subtle sounds of nature swirl around us, lulling us into a peaceful state of being.”
