In contrast, Petterson’s focus on the North Vancouver sulphur mountains reinforce a distinct locality, a spatial immediacy which calls to the rich industrial history and contested resource extraction economy of the present lower-mainland. A neon simulacrum of its neighbouring ranges, Petterson mines their distinct colour, saturating and heightening it to striking effect to better emphasize the incongruity of these yellow pyramids as they gradually become familiarized within the landscape and repurposed as landmark novelties.
Andre Petterson's mixed media paintings on panel combine elements of photography, painting and drawing. The artist takes inspiration from his frequent travels abroad, current contemporary art practices, and art history.
