Val Nelson is a well known Canadian painter, and an honours graduate of Media Arts at Emily Carr College of Art + Design. Her previous experience as a ballet dancer informs the embodied depictions of space captured in her paintings and drawings. A 2003 finalist in the Royal Bank Canadian Painting Competition, Nelson was a resident at the Vermont Studio Center on scholarship in 2011, with the assistance of a Canada Council Travel Grant. Her work is included in International Painting Annual 3, published by Manifest Creative Research and Drawing Center, and Carte Blanche: Volume II Painting, a survey book of Canadian painting. Her work can be found in public collections including the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Canada Council Art Bank, Surrey Art Gallery, Vancouver General Hospital and White Columns Online Artist Registry, as well as numerous private and corporate collections in Canada and abroad. Her paintings have been praised for their "loose, intelligent brushwork" by the Georgia Straight, and "intellectually and artistically daring" by the Edmonton Journal.
